A man has been bitten by a shark in the Red Sea.
Amr Abdel Kader (Qader, Qadar) was swimming near the Red Sea city of Ain Sokhna at Marina Beach Valley Dome on Saturday. The popular resort city is around 74 miles (120km) East of Cairo.
The 23-year-old student was bitten on the left leg and suffered a severe injury. The Suez governor Ahmed Helmi El-Hiatmi said the bite occurred while Mr. Kader was swimming “six kilometers offshore”, which is almost 4 miles offshore.
Mr. Kader appears to have been swimming in open water near a group of friends who watched him from a boat. After the incident, Kader was transported back to shore and taken to the Suez General Hospital in critical condition.
Doctors amputated his left leg above the knee and he is currently listed in stable condition.
El-Hiatmi has initiated an environmental committee to investigate the incident. He also added that beach goers should not be overly concerned. He told Ahram Online “Sharks live in the Red Sea and it’s normal to see them there, but the victim was swimming 6km from the beach, which makes it possible to encounter a shark. What may raise concerns, if we found a shark within 500 meters from the beach, where most of the locals and tourists swim.”
In 2015 A German tourist was killed by a shark in Al-Qusair Eygpt.
There have been a total of thirty-five shark attacks bites in 2016. Five of which were fatal, with three occurring in Australia. Eleven total in the US, with nine occurring in Florida. All locations have been marked on the 2016 shark attack bites tracking map.
